What is Trafficking?

Trafficking in persons means "The movement or transportation of a person from one place to another by any means and through fraud, deceit, coercion, deception, for forced labour or services, slavery, or practices similar to slavery or servitude"

 

Background Information on Trafficking

Do you know that:

  • Trafficking in persons can take place within a country 9 from rural areas to cities) or across borders?
  • Traffickers sometimes make $50,000 (#6.7 Million) on each trafficked person, whilst the trafficked person does all the labour, risk his/her life and gets poorer?
  • Majority of the thousands of Nigerian girls and women in prostitution and domestic servitude in Europe, Africa, America and Middle Eastern countries are victims of human trafficking who were deceived of greener pastures and opportunities in those countries.
  • Women and Children who are trafficked especially for domestic labour and commercial sex work are also victims of sexual abuse and are:

        i)   Vulnerable to contacting HIV/AIDS?       

        ii)  Human trafficking is an offence in Nigeria and any person caught, is liable on conviction to imprisonment for life?

Therefore Beware of !!!

  • False promises of work, Education or Marriage in the cities or abroad.
  • Offer from your community neighbours, your relative or friends or richer men and women who promise to take care of your children in the town or abroad.
  • Offer to travel to foreign countries without valid documents and relevant qualification to pursue education and vocation.
  • Transaction that are secret and involves oath taken in shrines with your body parts and blood.
  • Work that does not allow you to get all your wages personally.
  • Work that does not allow your free movement and negotiation.
