Day of the African Child
June 16, 2021
"30 years after the adoption of the Charter: Accelerate the implementation of Agenda 2040 for an Africa fit for children"
The African Union and its Member States observe the *DAY OF THE AFRICAN CHILD" in commemoration of the 16th June 1976 student uprising in Soweto, South Africa, where students who marched in protest against apartheid-inspired education were brutally murdered.
Today, millions of children are uneducated around the world and half of them live in Africa.
Women Consortium of Nigeria WOCON, in line with our mandate to enforce the rights of women and children, seize the opportunity of this special day to raise awareness of the need for the rights of African children to education and especially to the improvement of the educational system in Nigeria.
Our hearts go out to thousands of African children especially in Nigeria who are denied education due to insurgency and armed conflicts resulting in untold suffering, hardships, children living under slave-like conditions as a result of child trafficking, young girls in forced or early marriage and children living in abject poverty or in Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) Camps.
Happy International Day of the African Child and may African children all over be truly able to overcome all the obstacles to their rights to quality education
